01 GREG MORTENSON
Purpose

Greg Mortenson

One person can make a difference. Just ask Greg Mortenson—former mountaineer, medic, nurse, co-founder of The Central Asia Institute and Pennies for Peace, humanitarian, and author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace.

Mortenson was born in Minnesota in 1957. He grew up on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania where his father co-founded a local teaching hospital and his mother founded International School Moshi. Mortenson carried on both of their professions with his work both as a nurse and then as co-founder and executive director of the Central Asia Institute.

Mortenson’s transition from nursing to building schools began in 1993 with a journey to Pakistan to climb K2, the world’s second highest mountain in the Karakoram Range. Mortenson was climbing in honor of his sister, Christa, who died in 1992 of a massive seizure.

02 YOUR VALUES
Suggest A Value

When we first launched Values.com we wanted to find out which values you wanted to see featured on our website. Since then we have received over 3,787 submissions (thank you!). We have taken these submissions and created a ‘values tag cloud’ where each value has been sized according to how many times it has been suggested. As you can see, the results are interesting. Which values do you want to see featured on Values.com? Vote here.

03 NOMINATE YOUR HERO PROGRAM
Schools & Communities

Want to promote values in your school or community? We’ve found a great way to do this is to host a “nominate your hero” program. Local business people, parents, children, students, teachers, and other members of the community are nominated by their colleagues for exemplifying one or more of the seventy-five values promoted by The Foundation for a Better Life. This program unites the community as all are encouraged to look for the good deeds that their friends, co-workers and families are doing. In addition, holding an “awards ceremony” at the end of the allotted time provides recognition for both the nominated and the nominators, furthering a sense of community and solidarity. You could even take it a step further and Create A Billboard for those who have been nominated.

For more information on what this program might look like in your community, contact us today!
