Who Is Your Hero?

Your Everyday Hero: Woodrow Y.

My uncle, Woodrow, has been my hero for many years now. He was a loving husband to my aunt Charlotte - they were still holding hands and eating ice cream cones together after more than 55 years of marriage. Woodie is a wonderful dad to his daughter, and has served as a surrogate dad to many, many of her friends. He is confined to a wheelchair now, but still lives alone and refuses to be an invalid. When we visit he does the cooking for us all, making his famous - or infamous - soups. He greets everyone, always, with a grin and a hug. I can only aspire to be as warm and caring as he is. In spite of losing a son in Vietnam, losing his beloved wife to Alzheimer's, having a leg amputated and suffering nearly constant pain - Woodie is still the most positive person I know. He signs every letter "Enjoy every day; keep healthy and happy; and keep your garden planted."
