Who Is Your Hero?

Your Everyday Hero: Maxine Gorman G.

My wife, Maxine, a nurse, is my hero. She's 24x7x365 devoted to the needs and care for others.

She's responsible for the health care of 70,000 students in Prince George's County, Maryland. She's up at 5 AM and makes sure that there's staffing at 215 different health rooms. She's off to work at 8 AM and mentors to her Nurse Managers and many many others who call for life counseling, work problems, and nursing problems. She's off to visit schools, help with the health problems of many students and staff. She gets home at 6PM. By 7PM she's taking calls and messages about the next day's staffing. Finally she's to bed at about midnight. This is her life five days a week.

Then there's the weekends. Often we have bunches of our 23 grandchildren over for the weekend, or for football games, or soccer, or Sunday dinner.

As a mom, Maxine's raised 7 children and 1 husband. Two are University professors, 1 is the COO of the Archdiocese of Washington, 1 is an advance life support fireman and paramedic, 1 is a charge nurse at a local hospital, one is the Asst Dir of IT for the United States Conference Bishops, and 1 is Quality Assurance manager of a Vet Rx company.

Maxine's life is one of 200% service to others. She's my hero.
