Your Everyday Hero: Dana S.

While visiting our river cabin after a flood, that added 10+ feet of water to the river, an elderly woman, who was confused, and her husband, backed their car off the edge of a small highway into the muddy brown swirling water. Police and emergency people were around directing traffic and other things, but someone from the crowd went in. A 5'8" woman with a flannel shirt, jeans, and hiking boots. She dove into the murky water as I watched. She went over to his door and got the passenger out, the elderly husband. As the car sank in the rapids the elderly woman was going under. The hero climbed around the car and did what a few men had already been trying. After she jumped in, she got the woman free as the water covered her head. She swam the woman back to shore and a picture was taken as the hero left to get warm clothes. A picture of her holding her little girls hand, the little girl who got to see her mother save a couple from drowning in a river overflowing. That little girl was me.
