THE BEST OF THE BEST

Some people will be born today of a special breed
The ones that are born to fulfill a need
Ones that were created to save the rest
Living for others is their goal and their quest

They are the ones formed from a special clay
Made of courage and conviction - with a debt to pay
A debt of love for their fellow man
One of sacrifice and giving and a helping hand

They’re the ones who show up in times of need
Confident, trained, and prepared for whatever the deed
They do the jobs that no one else wants
Jobs that require bravery and sacrifice, and decisive and noble thoughts

And when asked why they do it and if they are ever afraid
They always look away - and this is what they say
They’re just doing their job - just trying to save a life
Protecting their families and neighbors - our possessions and our way of life

And they put their lives on the line for us each day
And it isn’t just for praise, notoriety, or even the pay
It’s for something much nobler that’s uniquely part of their breed
A code of honor - and a concern for others’ welfare and need

They’re the ones that are created to save the rest
The cream of the crop - the best of the best
The ones who are aware they may have to make the ultimate sacrifice
In order to save another - they may have to give up their own precious life

They’re policemen and firemen and emergency teams
The ones who come running - answering our pleas and our screams
Also pilots and soldiers and all members of our military forces
Who respond to the call - when our nation calls them to duty and service

They’re the ones created to save the rest
The cream of the crop - the best of the best
How great is their service to all of us on earth
Their reason for living - their duty of birth
