Everyday Hero: Lisa M.

Lisa was a mom who lived on our street. Everyone loved her, and had a lot of respect for her. She had two boys and a husband. She lived everyday to its fullest and always had a smile on. Then one day she found out that she had breast cancer. It took her by surprise, but she kept on living...she had a family to live for. She went through chemo, radiation; and she even went to Mexico for a treatment that was not in the U.S. yet. Unfortunately none of it worked, and she got weaker and weaker everyday. Through it all, though, Lisa had a smile and was always positive. Everyone in the neighborhood was cheering for her. We all knew if you needed help or a smile, Lisa was the one to go to. Lisa is my hero because through all of her pain she kept a smile and a positive attitude.

Growing up as a kid with sickle cell anemia, I literally lived half of my life in the hospital's cancer center. I saw a lot of kids go through cancer constantly traveling in and out of the hospital. Some of the friends that I met along the way lived, and some of them we're not so fortunate...I miss those kids everyday. They were also so positive and happy just like Lisa. I'm very sorry, I know how you must feel. I'll keep you and Lisa in my prayers.
