Your Everyday Hero: Carrie S.

My sister, Carrie, is my hero. I always tell people, "She's a saint." She is. For several years now, Carrie has cared for developmentally disabled people in a group home setting. She does things on a daily basis that I couldn't even imagine - changing diapers, dealing with all kinds of problems, bathing and even lifting these grown adults who have the minds of toddlers. In spite of all the challenges, she loves her "clients" and is a strong advocate for their rights and safety - and basic humanity. Her courage in standing up to those who would treat the residents poorly, compassion for those who are unable to take care of themselves, patience with difficult and demanding situations, and dedication to her job, willing to work overtime, graveyard shift and holidays - these are always inspiring to me. She's amazing.
