Students Raising $30,000 to Fight Childhood Epilepsy

Students at Campus Middle School and Belleview Elementary in Greenwood Village, CO are organizing the second annual Derek’s Dash, a 5k walk/run to raise money to fight childhood epilepsy one step and one syndrome at a time. The event will be held on August 29, 2010 at Village Greens Park in Greenwood Village. The money raised from this race goes to the IDEA League, a nonprofit founded by parents of children with Dravet Syndrome to promote research and education for the early diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and cure of Dravet Syndrome and related epilepsies. Last year was the first ever Derek’s Dash and there were over 220 participants, over 50 volunteers, and over $20,000 was raised for the IDEA League. This year if they are able to raise $30,000 the IDEA League will name a two year research study in honor of their friend Derek, who battles seizures daily. The students said, “It’s pretty cool that kids can do this without too much help from the parents! We know $30,000 is a lot of money, but we think we can do it! Although Derek faces challenges every day, he inspires us because of his positive attitude.”
