What's Your Name?

When I was twelve, I started to notice an isolated kid who usually kept to himself. I always saw either people staring at him and whispering to others about him or purposely ignoring him, not bothering to ask even what his name was. The kids at my school weren't the nicest, but, then again, they weren't the meanest either. It had been a year since I transferred from a school in a very poor area with tiny, dilapidated classrooms that I wouldn't even call a "school." Kids here had been so mean I couldn't even imagine they could live with themselves. This kid reminded me of that school; how he was the center of unwanted, terrible attention. One day, while I was eating lunch, I noticed him, sitting far away from everyone else, eating by himself. He had weight problems and was around 120 pounds, what I weighed, overweight. I asked him what his name was. It took a while, but eventually he said "Alex."
