To Protect and Serve

It was 15 degrees below zero and 1:30 AM when the car ran out of gas miles from home. I was young and poor, too poor to keep a full tank. My friend and I got out and started to walk in the cold. I had on my dancing shoes, silly me. But, my coat was warm enough for a cold day, not a truly cold night though. My breath was freezing to my face, and I was shivering uncontrollably in a few minutes. When I thought I couldn't take another minute, a state trooper rolled up behind us on that lonely mountain road, and insisted we get in. The warmth of his car was heaven, and he drove us to our front door. No lecture, just kindness and concern. I then understood the motto, "To protect and serve."
