When I was 10 I was hospitalized at Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in St. Louis, MO for ulcers. They were testing me for a reason and the condition. I had to stay a couple of days and that involved getting shots and extensive tests. I was scared when my parents left, because I believed they would give me shots while they were gone and not listen to me refuse. I knew that as a young person my opinion and fear meant nothing. The first night I went to bed and worried and cried the whole time. A nurse came in my room, sat down and read a book. I don't remember her name and never "met" her. Every time I woke up and looked she was still sitting there. She will never know how much that mattered and it has been 25 years later now. Just her caring about my feelings and making me feel safe made a difference.

I loved this story. As a nurse, we try our best to make our patients comfortable and feeling secure. It is nice to know that there are those of us who do make a difference and that our efforts are appreciated by some. I became a nurse because I was inspired by a wonderful nurse that I had when I was 17...she changed MY life. I wanted to give that compassion and caring to others who are experiencing a disturbance or crisis in their lives. It is our job to help alleviate the disruption in life caused by trauma, illness, or whatever has brought them to seek medical care.

It is very true that Nurses are angels on earth. A first time mother, I am supposed to trust my instincts to handle my baby, but a nurse taught me and gave me instructions on emotionally understanding and handling the baby. That helped me a lot. And yes, it makes a difference even now.

I often wonder if people really know how much small things make such an impression on someone. I have a daughter with medical problems and we have been blessed to have some wonderful medical personnel help us. I feel blessed each time one of these people is put in our path. God bless those who take that extra time to hold a hand, calm a fear or wipe a tear.
