This hero portrays the value of MAKING A DIFFERENCE

When I was a freshman in high school, I was very insecure and did not know how to speak up for myself. Some awful boys were making fun of my father, and I was just crawling inside myself a little further, saying nothing, and feeling terrible. Brent was a few years older than me. He was "Mr. Our High School," handsome, stong, football star and all around popular guy. He sat in the back row of the classroom wearing his varsity jacket, and with just a few quiet words, he shut those guys up and made me feel like I might be worth something after all. I don't even remember what he said exactly, but the gist of it was to let those guys know that they weren't cool at all and they would be wise to shut up - which they did immediately. I said nothing then, but was and am today so very grateful to him for changing that day for me from what it could have been. He was just being a decent person; it probably wasn't a big deal to him and I doubt he even remembers it now. But I think of it often. That experience could have colored my life much more negatively than it did, and instead he turned it into a positive by showing me that sometimes there would be someone to stand up for me when I wasn't strong enough to do it myself. Thank you Brent, and thank you to every other person who sees, and bothers to stand up for someone when they need it.
