Your Everyday Hero: Jean And Al T.

I am nominating Al and Jean, now in their 70s, for the utter compassion (as well as courage, determination, and commitment, and sacrifice) they have shown in caring for their now 29-year-old grandson, who is paralyzed from the chest down, with severe cerebral palsy and mental retardation. They have loved and nurtured him tenderly (while taking care of all of his daily needs including catherization) since he was one-year-old, through 45 major surgery and many, many health problems. They gave up their business to move him to a warmer climate and devote all their time to him. One surgeon told me, "There's no medical reason for his survival. It's the love they give."
